A unique, stunning antique piece by a rare maker! Famed Viennese Arts & Crafts designer Ernst Paltscho sold the finest jewellery to European aristocracy and royalty and examples of his work remain in the world's most important museums. This breathtaking and extremely stylized floral brooch is in solid 14 carat gold and is in the wonderful future-of-the-past rounded triangular shape. It's set with a stunning, genuine Essex crystal - a reverse carved and painted natural rock crystal, depicting a butterfly visiting a flower. The colours are just amazing, naturalistic and finely detailed with some superb shading and it's all over a matte gold ground, which gives contrast and character as the light moves across. The butterfly itself is inlaid with genuine butterfly wing, creating iridescence and life and really crawing the eye with intrigue. My favourite aspect of this piece is its edge to edge detail, showing sections of leaves it really feels like a cross section of a corner of real life. The back is engraved 'Breveté Dans Tous Les Pays' - 'Design Registered in All Countries', and bears Paltscho's maker's mark 'EP' alongside the Viennese gold control stamp. It dates to around 1910 and is in remarkable original condition, with only a few shallow edge dents to speak of. It weighs 9.5 grams and measures 1.25" x 1".
